i love dresses

via fieldguided
I am pretty much obsessed with this APC dress right now. As in, I have just been staring at it for the past 20 minutes and trying to figure out my odds for winning the lottery any time soon ...

wall art

via growing up creative
How cool is this? And its made from toilet paper rolls! Despite the fact that typing that last sentence made me feel somewhat like Martha Stewart on crack, I can't wait to try this in my room! I would love to paint the outside a dark brown and the inside gold ...

I had so much fun working on this project designing a site for a car wash service, and now it's up! I love doing illustration work ... my favorite part is the bird!

Need Supply

I have been a very bad blogger lately, which is sad, because I love blogging and getting sweet messages from strangers who like the same things as me, and I love cataloging the beautiful things I see. Now that I am all moved in to my new home FOR GOOD (Seriously) I finally have space for creating and maybe a little time too. BUT I will attempt to mitigate my shame by posting lots of lovely things now.

xo & more to come!

Bows and Baubles

by A Alicia
I really really LOVE this hand sewn felt broach at A Alicia's etsy shop. I would probably wear it every day until people started referring to me as the girl with the bow broach!

fame and fortune

Timo via Refinery 29
It is kind of vicariously exciting to have friends who become famous in glam circles, and a little weird and disorienting too. It's also a good reality check that going after your dreams and working REALLY hard is not such a crazy idea after all.

long weekend

I'm off to the beach for the long weekend. Looking forward to antiquing with my mom, cuddling with my pups, and the added luxury of having my 3 best friends there too!

I heart ...

My favorite splurge-y drink. I almost never drink soda, but when I do it's probably because I can't resist this stuff! It's yummy and made from natural ingredients, yay! My favorite flavors are Lingonberry and Pear. Find it at Whole Foods.

the pageturner
Over the course of some internet wandering tonight, I found this awesome brit magazine (available online at the above link). I highly recommend that you take a look!

Thursday, August 27, 2009

Today is my birthday. Usually I hate birthdays, they fill me with dread and that panicky oh no I overslept type of feeling, but not this year. This year I am choosing to be grateful. I'm 25 and I can finally say that I like who I am and I think that is a big deal. I have the most lovely amazing friends and family, and more blessings than I can count. My life may not be what I had imagined it would be at this point, but when is it ever! It's hard not to expect things to be perfect, but there is something very satisfying in imperfection.

apartment in the sky

You know how the girls in movies all have these crap jobs and no money, yet still manage to have the most fantastic apartments? Yeah, I'm trying to figure out how all that works. If you know, let me in on it! Off to search every corner of the internet for somewhere to call home.

I found these Gourmet magazines from the 40s while digging through a box of sports memorabilia while thrifting this weekend. The best part? They were only 50 cents! I think they would be darling framed in a kitchen, but for now I am enjoying reading the charming letters to the editor.

how i spent my weekend

This weekend was way too short. I went home to see my family and the days went by in a blur of activity. However, I did have time to go to my favorite antique shop in Wilmington. I bought a 1930s rouge pot in "Glorifying Red" a silk scarf and a 1900s hat buckle that I plan to turn into a belt. I never even made it to the beach, but that is probably just as well given the holiday weekend crowds.

Les Parapluies de Cherbourg

Tonight I watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg. It is so lovely, so beautiful and so heartbreaking. Now I'm off to practice my French at Live Mocha, that is if I can stop crying!

I am sort of obsessed with this outfit. And by sort of, I mean completely.

via two little indians
I love these photos and I love rainy days, which is good since it has rained just about every day this month with no end in sight! Perhaps today I will buy a new umbrella, but only if I can find a pretty one that makes me feel somewhat glamorous, even if slightly damp.

the little ballerina

via presentpast's photostream on flickr
I might be crazy, but on Wednesday I am starting ballet classes! I am really excited about it, but slightly cringing at the idea of hopping around in front of a wall sized mirror. I am trying to remember as much as possible from my last ballet class, which took place in 1993. But all I can recall is how much I liked my blue chiffon skirt!

How darling are these cards? I LOVE sewing on paper, this valentines day i made cards that I sewed with little hearts and paper birds. Of course, being totally lame, I failed to photograph them, but one happens to be on a darling co-dc dweller's shelf and I will have to remember to post it sometime!

i <3 ny

image from hsteckba on flickr

I really miss new york. I miss the sense that everything is possible, the energy and the vastness of possibilities. I miss discovering unusual foods (like orange blossom water) and watching street vendors making jewelry. I miss sample sales and window shopping and watching girls taking knitting classes at purl soho next door. I miss dashing out in the snow to get organic coffee or chocolate pear tarts. I miss wash and fold laundry. How can I feel homesick for a city I swore I would hate forever? I think that is part of the magic of the New York. It wins you over and pulls you in slowly, its charms lie in the space between crowded subway cars and thimble sized apartments. They're in the hidden treasures that take a bit of extra effort to find, the amazing vintage boutique, the street singers with huge talent, the perfect pizza and charming restauranteur, the small acts of kindness that are so much more valued because they are so unexpected.

DC is great, and I really like it, it's beautiful and green and historic, and it has loads of culture and interesting people, but it is so much more serious and restrained and it just feels different. But, I'm new here and I haven't learned any of the city's secrets yet, over time I will gradually find more and more gems and learn to love this place too, but I will keep reading the blogs of darling city girls and I will always ♥ NY.
