Today is my birthday. Usually I hate birthdays, they fill me with dread and that panicky oh no I overslept type of feeling, but not this year. This year I am choosing to be grateful. I'm 25 and I can finally say that I like who I am and I think that is a big deal. I have the most lovely amazing friends and family, and more blessings than I can count. My life may not be what I had imagined it would be at this point, but when is it ever! It's hard not to expect things to be perfect, but there is something very satisfying in imperfection.

This weekend was way too short. I went home to see my family and the days went by in a blur of activity. However, I did have time to go to my favorite antique shop in Wilmington. I bought a 1930s rouge pot in "Glorifying Red" a silk scarf and a 1900s hat buckle that I plan to turn into a belt. I never even made it to the beach, but that is probably just as well given the holiday weekend crowds.

I really miss new york. I miss the sense that everything is possible, the energy and the vastness of possibilities. I miss discovering unusual foods (like orange blossom water) and watching street vendors making jewelry. I miss sample sales and window shopping and watching girls taking knitting classes at purl soho next door. I miss dashing out in the snow to get organic coffee or chocolate pear tarts. I miss wash and fold laundry. How can I feel homesick for a city I swore I would hate forever? I think that is part of the magic of the New York. It wins you over and pulls you in slowly, its charms lie in the space between crowded subway cars and thimble sized apartments. They're in the hidden treasures that take a bit of extra effort to find, the amazing vintage boutique, the street singers with huge talent, the perfect pizza and charming restauranteur, the small acts of kindness that are so much more valued because they are so unexpected.

DC is great, and I really like it, it's beautiful and green and historic, and it has loads of culture and interesting people, but it is so much more serious and restrained and it just feels different. But, I'm new here and I haven't learned any of the city's secrets yet, over time I will gradually find more and more gems and learn to love this place too, but I will keep reading the blogs of darling city girls and I will always ♥ NY.

Today was a great day. At work we have a client, a stylist starting her own business, whose main instruction to us was "be creative and take risks!" I designed one out of three web site concepts that we presented her today, and being given free reign, my design was one that I personally LOVED. The client did too! She even had tears in her eyes! She and her partners will select the design they want later this week, and my co-worker's work is great so they can't go wrong, but I really really hope she picks my design! Once it is finalized (or rejected) I will post a link! But right now I am just so happy to have made someone else so happy!

I love swans and I think they are beautiful. When I lived in England, there was a swan family that we watched as the parents built the nest, laid the eggs, hatched them and then set of swimming and diving around the canal. (remembering this makes me miss england A LOT) I especially love this swan's necklace, and the colors, and the typography.

My church started this cool idea that I love, "My One Word is a simple exercise to help you start your year with vision. Instead of resolving not to do all the bad things you did last year, we want to see what we hope God will do in us, then sum it up with a single word."
Whatever your beliefs, this is a really great alternative to the ubiquitous diet and exercise plans plastered across every magazine cover out there. This year my word is Perspective. My life is a series of unknowns right now which is scary and disorienting for someone who likes to have everything under control. But I am trying to focus on beign positive and remembering that I have so much to be grateful for. One of my favorite sources of inspiration lately has been in CJane and NieNie. These women and their families are amazing. You should definitely go visit. Happy (belated) 2009.

My Mom has been busy finding new additions for our holiday decorations ... my favorite is the NOEL candle holders. No photos of any ornaments though ... Baxter thinks glass balls look like tasty treats so they are all put away for this year and only the top half of the tree is decorated ... he still gets presents in his stocking even though he has been naughty (the same presents as Molly, who is always good), because he is very nice and too cute to stay mad at!

I am in love with this piece by Su Blackwell (it is called Betty in Cloudland, how wonderful!). Papercutting is so much fun, but so scary, one slip of the x-acto knife and your done (unless you cheat and use tape!) But my favorite part is the shadows they create. I made a mini blizzard of paper snowflakes this weekend and suspended them from the ceiling with string ... I love watching their shadows move across the wall and if I can find the camera I might post a picture of them later!

How cute is this fairy door? When I was little I used to search for fairies and even hid little notes under rocks and in trees (I read a lot and was a highly imaginative child). Once I found a little cluster of mercury in the bathroom from a broken thermometer and rushed to show my Mom and sister the "fairy dust" I had found (it is so amazing the way it breaks apart and then reforms in perfect spheres) My mom was understandably horrified that I was playing with mercury, but I was just sad that it wasn't magical.

I decided to stay in the city alone over the holiday, thinking that it might be nice to have the apartment to myself and not have to watch ESPN or Cramer at all ... but it was just really really lonely and homesickness inducing. But today he is here and that makes me so very happy.

I LOVE this wedding invitation by designer Matt Dorfman. It is so much fun! (you have to click on it to read it) Plus I can totally relate to "I am never moving to New York" a few years of long distance and then "I'm moving to New York", but that is beside the point.

The holiday season is upon us! I ventured out into the throngs of people shopping in Soho to pick up a book from McNally Jackson, but while for many this is the first day of shopping, for me the day after Thanksgiving is The First Day of Christmas Music! I am LOVING The Hotel Cafe presents Winter Songs, especially Winter Song by Sara Bareilles and Ingrid Michaelson.
